There are no better uses for your time than this

My friend Jessica has a new site worth checking out, if only because she actually has something to say, not like the drivel found on your crappy site. Actually, I'm just kidding, I'm sure your site is a great contribution to the mediocrity that is the blogosphere. In the meantime see how Jess is actually making a difference to your life by reading what she has to say!

Schindler's List

This statement is exactly why there is no credence given (as it should be) to the court of public opinion:
Schindler said Schiavo was beginning to look like a survivor from a Nazi "concentration camp" and voiced a fear that hospice staff might try to hasten her end by giving her an overdose of morphine.

Yes, let's continue to attempt to gain sympathy for victims by comparing tragedies to one another. In fact, if you ask me, the victims of the Tsunami looked like they were in the World Trade Centre buildings when they were hit as well. 6 million Jews and the countless numbers of soldiers who died for them surely would appreciated their loss being related to the plight of a 41 year-old woman who may or may not have wanted to be allowed to die on her own terms. Brilliant.

Baseball is Back...

Opening Day is only 12 days away. I can already feel the excitement, can't wait to see the Tigers get hammered right out of the gate.

My predictions for the only two teams I follow (bring back the Expos) with any regular interest:

Toronto Blue Jays- 82 wins, 3rd place AL East
Detroit Tigers- 84 wins, 2nd place AL Central

Now, prove me wrong boys.

Everyone hates Patricia

Patricia Heaton Pleads for Terri Schiavo.

Patricia Heaton getting roasted on her own websites message board. Even on Entertainment Tonight your inane opinions aren't safe from derision. Too bad her webmaster can't seem to keep deleting the comments as soon as they show up. Celebrities are like children: they should be seen and not heard.

(Update Mar. 24: Not surprisingly, guestbook has been shutdown. But that hasn't stopped people from making fun of Moby's opinion on the story.)

The CJAM Show

I did a show for CJAM a few weeks ago, and was hoping to turn it into a semi-regular thing. It's been put on hold for now, but I wanted to put up the setlist on here before I threw it out. You never know this could be history in the making...

LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk Is Playing At My House
Be Your Own Pet - Damn Damn Leash
Final Fantasy - This Is The Dream Of Win & Reg
The Arcade Fire - No Cars Go (CBC Radio 3 Session)
The Cloud Room - Hey Now Now
The Information - A Simple Plan
Pony Up - Shut Up And Kiss Me
This Microwave World - The Hours
Eisley - Plenty of Paper
Maximo Park - Apply Some Pressure

For 45 minutes of my life, I played records.

Random things you should experience

  1. Mobb Deep's Shook Ones II mashed with Steve Zissou's helmet music. (via Catchdubs).
  2. Spike Jonze's Adidas commercial, featuring Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeah's fame on vocals. Quicktime required.
  3. New Coldplay songs, acoustic at that. #9 and #11 for those not familiar with their catalogue, or just too lazy. Get them while they last, something tells me they won't be there for long. (via Stereogum).
  4. Necrophilia among ducks ruffles research feathers.
  5. New tsunami fear as scientists find dangerous stresses on ocean floor. (both courtesy of The Guardian, aka MitM's favorite newspaper.
  6. Essien admits admiration for United. Make it happen Sir Alex, this move is badly needed.
  7. Young love, republican stizz.
  8. 'America's war on drugs is inflicting deep and disproportionate harm on women...' as reported by the AP. More support is needed for organizations like the ACLU and Electronic Freedom Foundation who do so much work on behalf of people who'll never realize the protections they've fought for the liberties of people around the world.
  9. Conservative Party of Canada finds itself in a time of reinvention, yet again. Any momentum they had going into the last election appears lost, it would really be a mistake for them to force a no confidence vote in the House.
  10. Last but not least, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) compares file-sharers to drunk drivers. Right, that's definitely the way to go about gathering public support for your cause, by comparing teenagers trying to download Black Eyed Peas songs to some knob about to commit vehicular manslaughter.

My Final Four: Illinois, Wake Forest, Connecticut, Kentucky.

Have a happy St. Patrick's Day, don't get too drunk, the weekend is just around the corner. Just make sure you don't do something like wave a British flag around in the face of a bunch of Catholics. Then again, who'd be dumb enough to do something like that?

It's the fashion week in Milan of the music industry.

Initially I wanted to go to South by Southwest, and there is without question plenty of reasons to be there.

But after reading this post, I'm really wondering of whether it's really worth it all. Seems like more of a hassle than the powderkeg of talent is worth.

Albums of the year so far

Seeing how it took me forever to put together a top albums of 2004 list this year I thought I'd be better off starting early. With that in mind here are my top 10 of 2005 up until this point. I have several albums that still need to be listened to that have already been released so if they qualify I'll put them on the next list.

On the off chance you'd want to buy one of these fine selections, follow the links, amazon.ca should have them all. I'll even split the commission with you if you want, so you might even end up saving yourself a quarter.

PS. These rankings are very loosely based, order is more for entertainment purposes than anything else.

10. Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams (Brush Fire Records)

09. Eisley - Room Noises (Reprise)

08. Via Satellite - Cities Are Temples (Loud and Clear Records)

07. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (Vice)

06. The Game - The Documentary (Aftermath/G Unit/Interscope)

05. Final Fantasy - Has A Good Home (Blocks)

04. The Wedding Present - Take Fountain (Manifesto)

03. ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Worlds Apart (Interscope)

02. Kaiser Chiefs - Employment (Universal)

01. Aqueduct - I Sold Gold (Barsurk)

Music to live by

Steve Lamacq's show this week features a live session with 2004 wonderband The Arcade Fire. Listen here.

I'm starting to really get excited about some of the new albums coming out in the next few months, especially a lot of the stuff coming out of the UK.

A few in the next month or two worth checking out:

The Bravery - s/t

Brendan Benson - The Alternative to Love
British Sea Power - Open Season
Alterkicks - Do Everything I Taught You (single)
Pony Up! - Pony Up! (EP) (out now)
The Kills - No Wow
Aqualung - Strange & Beautiful
Fischerspooner - Odyssey
World Leader Pretend - Fit for Faded (came out last week)
World Leader Pretend - Punches (May 3)
Juan Atkins - Berlin Sessions

And just in case you thought your problems would all be solved if you had money, this nutjob:

Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi

Gone but not forgotten

This week marks the end of CBC Radio 3's online magazine. The site will be relaunched with their sister sites, New Music Canada and Just Concerts being brought in under then CBC Radio 3 name. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind this decision is, but they not be bringing back the magazine which really has become a cultural staple in my life.

In the spirit of their site to promote underrepresented or aspects of Canadian culture that are simply shunted by the majority of the country, I'd recommend highly checking out their site before it closes if you have never seen it before.
